Whiplash - What happens to your body?

The average weight of your head is around 4.5 to 5 kilograms, so in the event of a car accident, this will certainly affect your body. Even if you're not driving that fast, the sudden shock with your car will cause your head to launch forward/backward or sideways and then back again quickly. The greater the speed, the greater the impact. Why should this affect the whole body, and what could it do to your muscles?

The impact

When we experience a car accident, it usually happens so fast that we don't have time to notice what's happening to our body. We're more focused on bracing ourselves for the blow, so we tend to strain our bodies as a natural reflex. In a fraction of a second, the body is completely tense, then the blow follows, the body jerking, and then everything settles down. You are left in a state of bewilderment and emotional shock.

Mechanical stress - whiplash

In the event of an accident, the head is knocked forwards/backwards or sideways and then back again. If the strength exceeds the body's ability to adapt, the tension will immediately settle in the body structures, for example the neck, lower back or wrists. After an accident

Any trauma to the body, such as in the event of a car accident, is most likely to result in physical stress. If this is not released, over time, the muscle layers in the back and neck will become increasingly tense in order to minimize mobility and thus prevent further tissue damage.

Effects of physical stress

Due to the impact on the nervous system due to the tension trapped in the muscles (mainly neck and lower back), the effects of body strain can range from mild to debilitating. These can be experienced as pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, headache, stiffness, movement restrictions, loss of flexibility/mobility, deformed posture, or fatigue. That is why it makes sense to have the trapped tension treated as quickly as possible after an accident (Gail Meggersee - Self-healing with Body Stress Release 2007).
